Gladwin Fedilies

HEAD COACH

Rank: Brown Belt
Training Since: 2008
Coaching Since: 2017

I’m Gladwin Fedilies, Head Instructor at Five Rings Jiu Jitsu Academy and a brown belt in Jiu Jitsu. Over the years, Jiu Jitsu has become the foundation of my life—not just as a martial artist, but as a mentor, teacher, and student committed to growth.

My mission is to serve. Whether I’m teaching someone their first takedown or helping a competitor fine-tune details before a major tournament, my role is to guide, support, and bring out the best in each individual who walks through our doors. I believe in structured, effective coaching that meets people where they are and moves them forward—physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of training students who have gone on to become State, National, and Oceania champions—athletes who’ve represented themselves and our team with discipline and heart. But just as importantly, I’ve coached countless students who have become champions in life—overcoming self-doubt, building confidence, developing discipline, and finding strength through consistent training.

What I offer goes beyond techniques. I provide students with a complete system of learning—covering self-defense, positional control, takedowns, escapes, transitions, and submissions—with an emphasis on detail, intention, and long-term progress. I help students develop sharper focus, emotional control under pressure, and the ability to think clearly in challenging situations.

Whether you're stepping onto the mats for the first time, returning after a long break, or actively preparing for high-level competition, I’m here to guide your journey. I’m committed to coaching with purpose, holding high standards, and helping every student grow with patience, precision, and care.

At Five Rings, we follow the Pedro Sauer Association’s technical standards—prioritizing precision, leverage, and connection. Master Pedro Sauer’s teachings shape how I coach: efficient, flowing Jiu Jitsu rooted in the fundamentals of Gracie Jiu Jitsu.

If you’re seeking a place to be challenged, supported, and guided with purpose, I’d be honoured to walk alongside you on your Jiu Jitsu journey at Five Rings.

COACH

Braden Kurtz

Rank: Purple Belt
Training Since: 2014

My name is Braden, and I’ve been training in martial arts since I was 17. What started as a hobby quickly became something much deeper. Over time, Jiu Jitsu has grown into a lifelong pursuit—an art form that constantly challenges me to evolve. No two practitioners are the same, and I’ve come to love how adaptable this art is. My own style is a reflection of that—it’s unorthodox, creative, and always changing as I continue to grow alongside the art itself.

But Jiu Jitsu is more than just movement or technique. It’s taught me how to stay calm under pressure, how to solve problems in real time, and how to face challenges with patience and resilience. These lessons have helped shape who I am, and I believe they’re just as valuable off the mats as they are during training.

As a coach, my focus is on giving back. I’m passionate about helping beginners take their first steps, and I do my best to create a space where people feel safe to learn, make mistakes, and grow. My goal isn’t just to teach technique—it’s to help students find their own rhythm, build confidence, and experience the deeper benefits that Jiu Jitsu has to offer.

Raad Tannous

COACH

Rank: Blue Belt
Training Since: 2022

I started Jiu Jitsu simply to try something new—without realizing just how much it would reshape my life. Almost three years later, under the guidance of Coach Gladwin, I’ve earned my blue belt, stepped into competition, and developed a deep respect for the art. But more than any achievement, it’s the internal growth that’s had the biggest impact. Jiu Jitsu has taught me discipline, resilience, and how to stay calm under pressure—lessons I carry with me every day.

What draws me most to Jiu Jitsu is the power of the fundamentals. I believe that a solid foundation—built on good habits, consistent practice, and sound technique—is the key to long-term success. I know what it feels like to start from scratch, which is why I take the time to support beginners with patience and clarity, and help experienced students refine the details that make all the difference.

Coaching isn’t just about teaching moves—it’s about helping others grow, both on and off the mats. Being part of someone’s journey, no matter what stage they’re at, is something I take seriously. Whether it’s helping a new student feel comfortable in their first class or drilling with someone prepping for a competition, I do my best to bring presence, encouragement, and detail to every session.

Training under Coach Gladwin has shown me the depth and effectiveness of this style, and it’s a privilege to now help share that with others so if you’re stepping into the academy for the first time—or returning after some time away—I’m here to support your learning, your goals, and your growth through the art of Jiu Jitsu.

COACH

Joseph Salameh

Rank: Blue Belt
Training Since: 2022

I’m Joseph Salameh—most people call me Coach Joey—and I’m a dedicated blue belt under Head Instructor Gladwin Fedilies. I’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for over two years, and it’s become a foundation in my life—both on and off the mats. With competition experience and a genuine passion for helping others, I coach students of all ages and experience levels, from kids to adults, supporting them at every stage of their journey.

I believe in structured, thoughtful training and the importance of meeting students where they’re at. I take time to listen, observe, and guide each person in a way that suits their individual goals. Whether it’s building confidence in a child’s first class or refining details for someone preparing to compete, I do my best to serve each student with care and consistency.

Jiu Jitsu has been a powerful tool in my own life, teaching me resilience, patience, and discipline. I’ve learned that progress is rarely instant—it’s earned through repetition, focus, and showing up even on the hard days. That mindset is something I try to pass on through my coaching.

I see Jiu Jitsu not just as a martial art, but as a way to give back. It’s my way of contributing to something bigger—helping others grow stronger, more capable, and more confident in who they are. I’m constantly learning and developing, not just for my own improvement, but so I can be a better coach and teammate for those around me.

My role is simple: to serve, to support, and to keep learning. Whether you're stepping on the mats for the first time or chasing a competition goal, I’m here to help however I can.
